Fabulous idea by Dollarstorehouse.com!
I have done my share of tie dying with kids – it’s hard to resist, as they really do love it! But, facing the facts – it is messy. Very messy. (I’m a mom that doesn’t mind a mess – and I still find it super messy.)
This tie dye idea was done in my daughters Brownies class. The final product looks adorable, can be used on anything (not just tights), and is not very messy! Better still – everything can be bought at the Dollar store and done in 3 easy steps.
You will need:
- Tights (or a t-shirt, or shorts, or a bag, or anything!)
- A small round container or plastic cup (I used an empty medicine bottle)
- An Elastic
- Coloured Sharpies
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Medicine Dropper
Step 1 Put your container inside the tights, right side up, and attach a rubber band snugly.
Step 2 Draw a little design in the middle of your circle with the Sharpies. Dots and stars work well.
Step 3 Using the medicine dropper, drop rubbing alcohol on your design and watch the colours blur!
Move your container and repeat the steps. When you are done, pop in the dryer for 10 minutes to ‘set’ the colours.
This is a very manageable activity to do even with a large group of kids. This would be a fun and inexpensive birthday party activity, or just great for a rainy day at home with the kids.
Here’s an example of a shirt that we made by following the same process as above:
These little tights would be an adorable baby shower gift, too! They may be modeled on my 5 month old son (shh… please don’t tell my hubby!), but they will be finding there way to my newest niece shortly.
I love activities that require minimal adult intervention. I think it is wonderful for kids’ self-esteem to independently create art (especially when it actually looks like art!).
Have you done any tye dye crafts projects lately?
